Inspiration
I had to dig through my 1990 photographs and negatives but this week has found me back in St Martin, French West Indies, and wandering down the waterside in Marigot the capital of the French side as I reminisce about our trip in 1990.
The waterside in Marigot now is lined with parking spots and Lolos…native food concessions, where it’s great to eat while watching the million dollar boats enter and leave the circular docks.
Wandering that same waterfront back then it was lined with dozens of fishing boats of all the colours of the rainbow…and then some! As a lover of colour and was inspired to create something with these colourful boats in mind.

I went home from our 1990 vacation with new knits in my mind. As I had so many cones of yarn of different colours on my studio shelves this would be a useful and fun way to work with all those colours. It had to be stripes…just like the boats that now lived in my fond memory.
When I start a garment I start with the back, see how that works out, measure the size and look at the shape…I had started putting more waist shaping in my work. If that pleases me and works well then I get on to the front. Normally, with a striped garment, you match the stripes at the side seams and at the front closure if it’s a cardigan or jacket…I decided to put stripes where I fancied and not match them at all.
Over the years this style with all it’s colours…or all my colours…has sold well and, of course, no two alike, some had no collar but I always put a little something on the back.
